Join the Key West Derby Dames

So you wanna join roller derby? You’ve come to the right place. There are a variety of ways to be a part of your local roller derby league, from skating to volunteering to becoming a referee.

Skaters

Any women interested in learning the sport of roller derby are welcome to come to practice, meet the skaters, learn more about what we do, and figure out if this is for you.

We do ask that if you are coming to practice, let us know so that we can keep an eye out for you, bring any gear that you might want to try out, or let you know if there are changes in the schedule.

Right now, we have open recruitment, so are welcoming any women at any time. You do not need to know how to skate — we will teach you! You will progress at your own pace, working with women at a skill level similar to your own.

Some things you should know:

  • The following gear is required to skate with us:
    • Mouthguard
    • Helmet
    • Elbow pads
    • Wrist guards
    • Knee pads
    • Quad roller skates (duh)
    • Other optional items you’ll probably eventually want: tools to adjust your skates, gear bag, wheels, bearings, skate parts (toe stops, nuts, cushions/bushings)

We can help you find and select gear, so come see us and ask before you invest.

  • If you decide to join, we collect dues ($10/month). You will also be required to purchase supplemental insurance even if you already have your own coverage ($85/year).
  • You will be expected to attend practices regularly (at least 80% attendance required).
  • You must help in some aspect of league business, but there are many different duties available, making it easy to find something that works for you and your abilities/time restraints.

Referees and Non-skating Officials

Interested in getting involved in derby, but not interested in getting hit? You’re in luck! We are always looking for dedicated individuals wanting to contribute as referees or non-skating officials and donate their time and skills to our league.

If you have a thing for rules and look good in black and white, consider wearing stripes and becoming an official. We’ll ask you to attend practices to sharpen your skating skills, learn the rules, and help the team improve. And of course, you’ll be a beloved zebra on the rink for bouts.

Not interested in skating, but still want to be part of the action? We’ve got something for you, too! Key West Derby Dames is always looking for volunteers, particularly to serve as non-skating officials during bouts. Our entire league is run by skaters and volunteers, and there is never a shortage of things to get done to bring derby to the southernmost city.

Contact us for more information on either of these opportunities.
